The
quick recall of multiplication tables is a useful aid for pupils and can be
used to help solve many arithmetical problems. There are many ways in which the
tables can be learned, some ideas can be found in the section Websites to aid mathematical learning.
To
check on the progress that pupils are making in the quick recall of
multiplication tables, pupils are regularly tested and results keep.
Table
tests often consist of 48 mixed multiplication questions, which you have to
attempt to answer in 3 minutes or less. Your targets for improvement include
getting an “ever increasing” number correct out of 48, in the 3 minutes
allowed, or trying to get all 48 correct in a shorter and shorter time.
It
is deemed that pupils who can answer all 48 questions correctly in less than 3 minutes, “know the quick recall of multiplication tables.”
The
current school record for 48 questions, held by Paramjosh
Theora is 48 correct in 39 seconds on 25 09 08.
Prior
to this Adam Caton held the record from 1999 to 2008
with 48 correct in 48 seconds; this record was equalled by 3 people during
2009.

In
recent years, the 48 questions have not been much of a challenge, with many
pupils answering all 48 questions correctly in less than 1 minute.
The
Great Times Table Challenge,
taken once per term gives pupils a challenge.
The
Great Times Table Challenge has 300 questions, with 5 minutes to do as many as
possible. Any question missed out or incorrect results in no further questions
being marked.
Parajosh Theora also
holds the record for The Great Times Table Challenge, with a 281 correct out of
281 in June 2009.
